The execution plan of water intake from underground water is a complex of various parts that foresee:
- site selection for well placement;
- selection of underground water layer for constant exploitation;
- determination of possible discharge of single well, determination of required quantity of functional and reserved wells and of the distance between them;
- calculation of the interaction between all wells;
- selection of filter type for well and determination of its principal dimensions;
- selection of pumping and water-lifting equipment for constant exploitation;
- selection of drilling method and boring machine;
- development of well construction and head wall;
- hydro-geological researches and calculations;
- calculation of water intake productivity and of dynamic water level reduction in the water intake itself and in the zone of its influence during estimated service life of exploitation.
- selection of water intake type, scheme and structure, pumping equipment and linking
communications;
- assessment of underground water quality and composition of sanitary protection zone project and, in the case of necessity, of special measures on underwater protection against contamination by domestic, industrial and other waste waters;
- water influence evaluation of the projectable water intake on closest neighboring water intakes, environment, flora and fauna.
Execution plan that have passed required expertise in geological services, sanitary epidemic and environmental protection institutions represents a legal grounds for drilling authorization obtainment.
2. What does the project include?
Water intake execution plan of underground waters represents a compendium of several books (volumes), which includes:
- explanatory note with passport of project, hydrogeological grounds of well drilling project and dimensions of sanitary protection zone; evaluation of influence on environment, protection measures for environment, description of sanitary protection zone, engineer-geological characteristic of pumping station sites; pumping station, equipment and recommendations on wells exploitation; drilling and construction project plan; various text attachments (see in the next question), drawings, specifications; plan of wells placement, accomplishment of the first belt of sanitary protection zone; project and estimate documentation.
3. What kind of documents are required?
Mentioned below is a list of required documents for well projecting according to DBN А.2.2-3-2004 (attachment G):
1. Land ownership confirming documents (Act on the right of ownership of the land or Agreement of land lease with a deed of acceptance and conveyance).
2. Normative calculation of water usage needs (questionnaire) signed by client.
3. Situational plan (m 1: 10000; m 1: 2000) and the general plan of the territory on a topographic basis (m 1: 500).
4. Decision of Local Executive Committee "On permission of the beginning of project exploratory works".
5. Act of survey and selection of land site for construction.
6. Order for projecting.
7. Technical task for projecting (task for projecting of objects (structures) of industrial assignment is negotiated with the territorial organizations in accordance with DBN A 2.3-1).
8. Report on engineering-geological survey (with graphical materials).
9. Architectural-planning assignment (APA);
10. Preliminary conclusion by geological service concerning the possibility of underground waters usage.
11. Conclusion of sanitary epidemic station about site’s suitability for water intake construction (form 301).
4. What is needed to begin a project?
In order to reduce projecting time, we can start working having such documents:
1. (RS) Requirements specification for projecting.
2. Preliminary conclusion of geological services (in the city of Kiev as well as in Kiev, Chernigov, Zhitomir regions). Such conclusion is issued by “Pivnitchgeologiya”;
3. Order for projecting.
4. General and situational plans are preferably or tracing from cadastre.
5. Land ownership confirming documents (Act on the right of ownership of the land or Agreement of land lease with a deed of acceptance and conveyance).
6. Normative calculation of water use, questionnaire or technical conditions of the pipeline;
7. Report of engineering-geological researches (with graphic materials).
5. What is needed for a concordance of execution plan?
For concordance of execution plan, skillfully developed project of water intake is required as well as availability of the following authorization-based documents:
1. Decision of Local Executive Committee "On permission of the beginning of project exploratory works".
2. Act of survey and selection of land site for construction.
3. Conclusion of sanitary epidemic station about site’s suitability for water intake construction (form 301).
6. Who should prepare required documents for projecting?
A customer provides a source data required for projecting (supplement G DBN A. 2.2-3-2004).
On instructions of customer, collection, preparation and execution of source documentation required can be performed by the projecting company for a fee.
7. What are the stages of the projecting?
1st stage – exploration of the development project possibility and of water intake construction.
2nd stage – collection of special documentation, required to begin projecting research and constructional works.
3rd stage – hydrogeological studies, calculations and analyses.
4th stage – execution plan development.
5th stage – concordance of the execution plan.
6th stage – drilling authorization obtainment.
8. What does the customer receive as a result of the project?
Competent and qualitative developed execution plan, which is like a “crib” for drilling machine-tool operators, builders, installers and other performers. With an appropriate approach will allow properly and competently organize and simplify drilling, building and assembly and other works, minimize terms of execution of these works, optimize well and pumping equipment performance, undertake necessary environmental protection measures, which, finally, will improve water quality.

9. What is a sanitarian zone?
Sanitary protection zone (SPZ) is a territory which includes the source of water supply and consists in belts with special economic and protection of underground waters against pollution are installed. SPZ organize in the composition of three belts:
- the first belt (strict regime) includes a territory of location of all water intake structures, all water supplying facilities and pipeline. Its purpose is to protect the water intake sites and water facilities from accidental or deliberate pollution or damage.
- the second belt (belts of restrictions or microbial pollution zone) is determined by hydrodynamic calculations and includes the territory allocated to prevent water and water sources from pollution. The second belt takes into account the time of microbial pollution of water to water intake, taken depending on climatic areas and protection of the underground waters from 100 to 400 days of time during which the pollution that happened on the surface outside of the second belt reaches the underground water horizon.
- the third belt (belt of chemical contamination) is determined by hydrodynamic calculations, based on conditions that, if outside of its boundaries a stable chemical pollution is incoming into water horizon, so they will appear outside of the zone of water intake station’s nutrition, or will make it to it not earlier than expiration of the calculated term of exploitation. Minimum estimated well exploitation term is 25 years. Usually 10 000 days are used to estimate exploitation term, which is approximately 10% more than 25 years, or 9125 days.
Belts represent ellipses whose center lies in the middle of water supply source. If there are several such sources (few wells), it is necessary to allocate few ellipses with a center in the middle of each well. The main purpose of establishing and maintaining SPZ regime is sanitary protection of the water sources and water facilities from pollution, as well as of the territories on which they are located. In each of the three belts, as well as within a buffer strip, respectively to the belt assignment, special regime is installed and course of events is determined aimed at prevention of deterioration of water quality.
The belt calculations depend on the specific water source, hydro-geological conditions of the site, on which water intake is located.
10. Water quality, on which water horizon should the well be drilled?

12. Who should concord an execution plan?
According to DBN 2.2-3-2004 (p.9.16), submission of project documentation for a concordance and expertise is the customer’s responsibility. If necessary projecting company takes part in consideration of the projecting decisions in expertise institutions. On customer’s order presentation of projecting documentation for a concordance and expertise can be performed by projecting organization after customer’s agreement and for a fee.
